Elizabeth Baikie and David Traill of Elsness

Elizabeth Baikie married David Traill of Elsness (b. October 1692), the second son of  John Traill of Elsness in Sanday and his first wife, Helen Stewart on  30th April 1717.

David Traill was made a Burgess of Kirkwall by order of the Council on 20th August 1706.

Elizabeth Baikie and David Traill had children:

  • John Traill of Elsness (b.1718) who married Sibilla Traill (b. 1720), the daughter of George Traill of Hobbister and Isabel Loutitt. He was made a Burgess of Kirkwall by order of the Council on 22nd September 1737. They had children:
    • Margaret Traill (b. 1757) who married Rev Hugh L Sutherland on 8th December 1773
    • Elizabeth Traill who married John Urquhart, merchant, in 1794
    • Isabella Traill who married Andrew Baikie on 6th December 1783
  • Helen Traill (b. 5th December 1720) who married (1) Charles Graham of Hourston (2) Rev James Tyrie of Stromness.   She died on 5th October 1796.
  • Elizabeth Traill (b. 1725)
  • Margaret Traill (b. 1726)
  • Jacoba Traill (b. 1728)
  • David Traill who was a gunner on HMS Flamborough


David Traill died in November 1729.

Elizabeth Baikie got involved in the legal action between the Feas and the Traills resulting from the "marriage" of her aunt, Barbara Fea to Patrick Traill of Elsness, David Traill's older brother. This followed of  the death of both Traill brothers.
