John, as well as his brother Alexander, went into the coach building and painting business with James Traill Fea, their uncle.

On Alexander's birth record John C. T. Fea's occupation is "Baker." He is later listed as a master baker on his last son John's birth record.

He died around 13th January 1849 and the inventory at the time of his death gives his occupation as spirit dealer and baker. The inventory includes cash, stock, household furniture, business debtors. His wife, Sarah Bell, had entered into the management of the estate. Inventory was recorded on 5th April 1850 and signed by "Sarah Fea".
