Jane Winton

Jane Winton (b. 30th November 1862, Grangemouth) was the eighth of the children of Alexander Winton and Helen Winton.

The family were in Grangemouth, having been previously in Glasgow. Jane, like a number of her sisters, was to marry in the Glasgow area, her first husband being Michael McKechnie (b. 1852). This was on 12th March 1880 in Cathcart, Renfrewshire. Michael was the son of William McKechnie and his wife Rachel.

Their two children were born in Scotland:

  • Daisy McKenzie b. 1882
  • William McKenzie b. 1894

Jane and Michael emigrated to Cuyahoga County, Ohio where quite a number of Jane’s brothers and sisters were to also to stay. Unfortunately, Michael died at Cleveland, Cuyahoga on 9th April 1900, aged forty eight.

Jane had another two marriages:

  • George O Esterbrook on 11th June 1904 in Cuyahoga CountY. George was born in 1856 in Tiffin, Defiance, Ohio, the son of William Esterbrook and Isabella Griswold.
  • Harold Durand Bates on 4th May 1918, again in Cuyahoga County. Harold was born in Ohio on 23rd April 1875, the son of Harry F Bates and his wife Agnes.

Jane and Harold were in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1920 and Midland Michigan in 1930, by which time Jane was sixty eight. Harold died in Canton, Stark, Ohio on 2nd July 1958, aged eighty three.
