Jane Fea Spence b. 1819 in Lerwick was the eldest of the children of William Spence and Jane Green Fea.

Jane married her first-cousin, Gilbert Spence on 6th June 1844 in Unst. Gilbert was born in Unst in 1795 and the son of William Spence and Anne McDougall.

Jane and Gilbert had three daughters who were born in Unst:

• Jane Catherine Spence b. 7th March 1845

• Christina Ingram Spence b. 30th January 1848

• Jessie Paterson Spence b. 26th May 1850

Gilbert died in 1850 and Jane emigrated to New Zealand. She lived at Motukaraka for 30 years until her death in 1908.
