James Fea and Jean Cooper \ James Fea and Margaret Sinclair

Janet Fea and James Sinclair

Janet Fea was born 22nd May 1825, on Stronsay, the first child of James Fea and Margaret Sinclair.  She appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with the family at Newbiggin in Stronsay.  In 1851 she listed her occupation as Strawplaiter.  She married James Sinclair (b. 18th August 1822) on 24th April 1851.  James was son of Edward Sinclair and Margaret Miller.

They lived at Burrogate, Stronsay, where their eight children were born:

  • Janet Sinclair   b. 1849
  • Margaret Sinclair  b. 1852.  Margaret was a dressmaker in 1881.
  • Barbara Sinclair  (1854 - 1933), married George Organ.
  • Elizabeth Sinclair  b. 17th September 1856; died 16th March, 1879. bur. Burrogate
  • Mary Sinclair   b. 27th May1859
  • Ann Twatt Sinclair  b. 10th May 1862.  A General Servant aged 18 years in 1881.
  • Alexandrina Forbes Sinclair b. 13th March 1865.  Agricultural Labourer aged 15 years in 1881
  • James Sinclair   b. 14th July 1867 married Williamina  Brodie.


James listed his occupation as Fisherman in 1881.  His death certificate states he was a farmer.

Janet died 25th May, 1897 on Stronsay.  James died 27th February, 1906, aged 84 years.
