Janet Fea Fotheringham and John Peace

Janet Fea Fotheringham married John Peace and had three sons and four daughters:

  • John Anderson Peace (baptised 28th May 1800), clearly named after the minister in Stronsay at the time, John Anderson.  He married Euphan Taylor in 1834 and they lived at Hagar.
  • George Peace (baptised 2nd October 1801) who married Baikie Sherer in 1823 and had at least two sons.  They lived at Dykeside and she was a widower by the time of the 1861 census.
  • Helen Fea Peace (baptised 2nd March 1805)
  • Isabella Fea Peace (baptised 11th September 1806) who married John Grant in 1828.
  • Patrick Fotheringham Peace (baptised 11th September 1809)
  • Barbara Heddle Peace (baptised 11th August 1811)
  • Janet Fea Fotheringham Peace (baptised 19th May 1815) who married William Young in Edinburgh in 1840.

On 26th September 1808, John Peace was fishing off Rothiesholm Head in Stronsay and saw what he thought was a dead whale some quarter of a mile from shore.  It later came ashore after a south westerly gale and he measured it to be some fifty five feet in length. It was a rather unusual creature and he, as well as George Sherar of Rothiesholm and William Folsetter gave affidavits in Kirkwall detailing what they saw.

Janet Fea Fotheringham died, at around the aged of 44 years, on 17th May 1815. It does appear that this was due to complications of child birth.

John Peace was remarried in 1817 by the seceder minister Rev Mr Taylor.
