Salt Pans on the Calf of Eday

There were salt pans on the Calf of Eday, in the past. The manufacture of salt had been introduced around 1632, when the pans had been erected by the Earl of Carrick. This was prior to the acquisition of the property by the Buchanans.

With the death of the Earl of Carrick, these were neglected and allowed to fall into disuse.
