Joan Fea and John Laing

Joan Fea (b. about 1825) was a daughter of Magnus Sinclair Fea. Her mother was Joan Mather.

She married John Laing, the son of Thomas Laing and Christina Shuardson in Lerwick on 6th November 1845. John was born at Swinister, Delting on 20th May 1819.

Joan and John had eight children who were all born in Lerwick:

• Ann Laing who was born in 1845 and died in Lerwick on 10th November 1852.

• Christina Laing b. 6th January 1849

• Robert Laing b. 31st October 1850

• Ann Robina Laing who was born on 1st June 1853 and died in Lerwick on 21st July 1860.

• Joan Laing who was born on 19th August 1855 and died in Lerwick on 11th March 1864.

• John Laing b. 7th August 1857

• William Laing b. 12th August 1859 who married Anne Finlayson

• Robert Laing b. 10th September 1862

Joan was at 14 Pitt Lane, Lerwick with daughters Christina and Ann as well as her mother at the time of the 1851 census. John was away. Joan's occupation is given as dressmaker.

At the time of 1851 census, John was away and Joan was at 14 Pitt Lane, Lerwick with daughters Christina and Anna, and her mother. Ten years later, John was home as were Christina, Joan and William. Joan's mother was still living there. Her mother was still with the family in 1861 although again her husband was not. Children Christina, Joan and William were also there. Robert was born subsequently.

Joan died in Lerwick on 20th June 1863.
