William B M Fea and Sarah Coburn

William Beattie Mowat Fea was born on 6th October 1851 in Evie and Rendall, second son of John Hadden and Eliza Fea.  He emigrated to New Zealand in 1871.  For two years he was engaged in agricultural pursuits for Mr. T Culling of North Taieri and then became connected with the firm of Gregg and Co as lad, storeman, salesman, traveller and partner. ( - The Cyclopaedia of New Zealand).

On 8th January 1878 William married Sarah Coburn.  Sarah was born in Wigtownshire, Scotland, in 1856.  Their children were:

  • unnamed (premature birth, lived six hours) 2nd September 1878, Dunedin.
  • John Hadden Fea born 26th August 1879; died 12th September 1879 (bronchitis)
  • Ethel M Fea born 1881; died 2nd November 1920 (tram accident)
  • John Hadden Fea born 1886; died of wounds 9th August 1915 at Gallipoli
  • Ernest William Fea born  c.1889; died 2nd April 1920 aged 38 (war injuries)

William died 28th August 1937 aged 85.  Sarah died 23rd March 1945 at Dunedin.
