Jane Hourston and Robert Hercus

Jane Hourston is only known as the mother of two children and the wife of Robert Harcus.

The children were:

• Jane Hercus, born about 1791. Jane appears in the 1851 census at Lodge, Eday. The census indicates that she was born in Pharay and was unmarried. The various censuses indicate her occupation as variously stocking knitter, straw plaiter or servant. She died on 3rd May 1875.

• Marrion Hercus, born 2nd July 1797 according to the Old Parish Records: “Marrion, lawful daughter to Robert Hercus and Jean Hourston was born on the second of July Seventeen Hundred and ninety seven and baptised on the Sixth of August following by the Reverend Mr Anderson, Minister in presence of the Congregation.” There is no indication that she was necessarily born in Pharay as opposed to Eday.

It is not known where Jane Hourston and Robert Harcus lived.
