David Hourston and Margaret Seator Harcus

David Hourston (b. 19th September 1845) was a son of John Hourston and Mary Reid. He was with the family at Millbank in 1861 and married Margaret Seator Harcus, the daughter of Henry Harcus, the Baptist minister in Westray, and Phillis Seator about 1870. Their children included:

  • John Hourston, born 21st November 1871, Eday (although Sanday per the 1881 census)
  • Hennetta Phillis Hourston, born 6th April 1873, Eday who it is thought married Thomas Bolton in Ayr in 1906
  • James Scott Hourston, born 18th October 1874 in Kirkwall
  • Caroline M Hourston, born 1877 in Kirkwall who married Grant Bowie Gibson in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty on 6th June 1928
  • David Hourston, born 1880 in Kirkwall

There may be additional family.

David and Margaret were in Albert Street in Kirkwall in 1881. David worked as a draper.

They subsequently moved to Ayrshire where David owned the first department store in Ayr (about 1896). David had died by the time of their daughter Caroline’s marriage in 1928. Margaret died at Greenfield, Prestwick on 27th January 1931.
