Jessie Harcus and Oliver Scott

Jessie Harcus (b. 16th March 1834) was a daughter of William Harcus and Barbara Swordie.

She married widower Oliver Scott (b. 1st November 1818) in St Andrews on 6th May 1869. Oliver was born in Sanday and the son of John Scott and Janet Drever. His first marriage had been on 8th May 1840 in St Andrews to Mary Marwick and they had three children who were with their widowed father at Holland in St Andrews in 1861. These included, Margaret Scott who had married Jessie’s younger brother, John Harcus, in 1865.

Jessie joined Oliver at Holland and their first child was also there along with three servants in 1871. The children by Oliver’s first marriage had left.

Jessie and Oliver had three children:

• Mary Ann Scott, born 24th April 1870 who married Alfred Tomlinson in Stromness in 1919. She died in Kirkwall on 10th April 1933.

• William Scott, born 22nd December 1872 who married Jessie Jane Lennie at the Ness in St Andrews on 25th January 1900. Jane was the daughter of Robert Lennie and Ann Tait and an assistant teacher.

• Oliva Jane Scott, born 1877 and married James S Campbell (b. about 1876) in St Andrews in 1902. A son, James William Campbell, died on 22nd February 1929 at the age of twenty three. Oliva died in Kirkwall in on 4th August 1950 and James on 8th November 1952.

Their son had married by 1901 and was with the family at Holland with his new wife and Jessie and Oliver’s first grandchild.

Oliver died at Holland on 21st April 1910.

Jessie died at Binscarth in Firth on 26th May 1920. She was eighty six.
