John Sinclair and Jane Isbister

John Sinclair (b. 17th February 1865) was a son of John Sinclair and Jean Smith Harcus. After leaving the family at Kirkbrae in Westray, John was a farm servant at Clifton in 1881.

He married Jane Isbister on 13th November 1888 in Kirkwall. Jane (b. 1st February 1865) was the daughter of David Isbister and Betsy Linklater.

John and Jane had three children born in Kirkwall:

• Jemima Jane Sinclair, born about 1890

• John Robert Sinclair, born 1892

• James William Sinclair, born 1893

In 1891, they and their first child were in Bridge St Close and John’s occupation given as merchant seaman RNR 1st class.

Jane was already a widow when she died of tuberculosis on 5th May 1894. She was just twenty nine.
