Mary Ann Harcus and James Miller

Mary Ann Harcus (b. 10th March 1865) was the younger of the two children of William Harcus and Mary Wishart Cursiter.

She married James Miller on 22nd December 1898 in Kirkwall. James was the son of Robert Miller and Ann Scott and living in Main Street at the time. He was a general labourer.

It is noted that in the census of 1901, there is a Mary A Harcus living at 9 Bridge St. This is likely to be the daughter of William Harcus and Mary Cursiter as the prior entry amongst the households at that address is the father. Mary is on her own and described as a soldier’s wife. Her expected age per the censuses varied over the years so this is not entirely conclusive.

However, Mary died at 9 Bridge St on 31st March 1920. James signed the death register. His occupation at that time was carpenter.
