John Peace and Isabella Shearer

John Peace was born in Kirkwall about 1819 to John Peace and Margaret Peace.

He married Isabella Shearer there on 5th May 1843. They had five children:

• John Peace, born about 1844

• William Peace, born about 1846

• George R Guthrie Peace, born about 1852

• James Peace, born 22nd February 1857

• Isabella Peace, born 22nd May 1859

The family were Shore St, Kirkwall in 1851 and the Long Wynd in 1861. In both censuses, John’s occupation is given as boatman.

He drowned with his son George when their boat foundered off Kirkwall Bay on 23rd March 1863. There is not thought to be any relationship to Stewart Harcus from Eday who also drowned with John being from Kirkwall and his wife from Stronsay.
