Return of General Gamarra to Lima

“Gamarra’s entry into Lima was like a funeral procession; thousands of spectators looking on in silence with mournful countenances, and not a single “viva” was uttered. On the other hand, General Santa Cruz is a noble, brave and generous man, and a great friend to the interests of the English merchants here, who sincerely regret his unfortunate defeat and overthrow at Yungay. Gamarra is the reverse, and an avowed enemy to all foreigners having assisted to push him out in 1834”
