Margaret Hercus and Robert Groat

Margaret Hercus was born about 1834 or 1835 at Ness, daughter of John Hercus and Jane Drummond. She was listed as age 5 in the 1841 census. She married her cousin Robert Groat at Doggerboat, Pharay on 18th December 1856. Robert was born 16th February 1831 and baptised 8th March 1831, the son of Elizabeth Harcus (Hercus) and Robert Groat. (Elizabeth Harcus and John Harcus were siblings, and therefore Margaret and Robert were first cousins). Margaret and Robert had a daughter:

• Margaret Groat, b. 29th November 1857 who married her cousin, David Hercus

Margaret died at Quoy, Pharay on 14th January 1859, at the very young age of 23. Robert was a fisherman, and he died on 13th September1872 of heart disease.
