James Groat and Mary Drummond

James Groat, son of Robert Groat and Elizabeth Harcus was born on 12th January 1839 and baptised 7th April 1839. On 8th February 1866, he married Mary Drummond at Roadside, Pharay. Mary (sister of Ann who had married James' brother Stewart) was daughter of John Drummond and Janet Reid, born 20th May 1842 and baptised the following 10th of July. They had five children:

• James Groat, b. 30th May 1867 who married Jane Drever

• Mary Groat, b. 13th Oct 1871 who married John Leslie

• Barbara Ann Groat, b. 11th Sep 1873 who married Thomas Stevenson of Westray in 1900. Thomas was born 21st Feb 1871 at Girth, Westray to Henry Stevenson and Betsy Burgher. In 1901 they were living with her parents at Lakequoy, Pharay with their 2-month old daughter Mary. By 1903 they had settled in Damaquoy, Westray where they raised a large family. Thomas died there in 1939 at age 68.

• John Groat, b. 1876 and d. 16th Apr 1896, age 19

• Robert Groat, b. 18th Dec 1883, a seaman, who married Isabella Jane Heddle of Balfour Village, Shapinsay, 1st July 1908.

James and Mary lived first at Roadside, but by 1881 were at Lakequoy, Pharay. James, a farmer, died at age 65, on 11th September 1904.
