Adam Benston Harcus and Jane Brown

Adam Benston Harcus, the younger of William Harcus and Isabella Benston's two sons, was born on Eday about 1853. By 1861 he was with his family on Shapinsay anad he married there, on 13th May 1875, Jane Brown of Bricks, Shapinsay. Jane, the daughter of William Brown and Jane Cromarty was born in South Ronaldsay on 27th November 1853 and was baptised 12th February 1854. Adam and Jane had eleven known children, including a set of twins:

  • Johan Harcus, b. 1876, Shapinsay
  • William Brown Harcus, b. about Aug 1877,Shapinsay, d. 19th Sept 1877 at age one month
  • Elizabeth Harcus, b. 1880, Shapinsay
  • Jane Harcus, b. 1883, Shapinsay
  • Catherine Harcus, b. 1886, Shapinsay
  • Robert Harcus, b. 1888, Shapinsay
  • Mary Harcus, b. 1890, Drumoak, Aberdeenshire
  • Adam Harcus, b. 1893, Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire
  • Helen Ross Harcus, b. 1896, Kincardine O'Neil, a twin
  • Samuel Harcus, b. 1896, Kincardine, O'Neil, a twin, who married Johan Strachan in Inverierie, Aberdeenshire, 20th Dec 1919
  • Annie Lawson Harcus, b. 1899, Kincardine O'Neil, who married James Tait in Midmar Parish, Aberdeenshire, 13th June 1923

The family was living at Goestane, Shapinsay in 1881. About 1890 they moved to Aberdeenshire, first settling in Drumoak and later in Kincardine O'Neil. Still later they were evidently at Comers Wood, Midmar Parish. Adam was a farm servant or farmer. Jane died in hospital in Aberdeen, 3rd August 1926, leaving Adam a widower. At the time he was living in Midmar. His death record has not been located. It is not known what became of their children.
