Jane Gray and James Tulloch

Jane Gray was the second daughter of William Gray and Mary Robertson.

To William Gray and Mary Robertson his spouse resident at Holland a daughter born 17 December 1835 and baptized 17 July 1836 named Jane.

Westray and Papa Westray OPR

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses she was included in her parents' household at Holland. On 12 July 1860 she married James Tulloch (born in Westray in 1840, the son of James Tulloch and Elizabeth Rendall), and their known children are:

  • Mary Tulloch, born 26th October 1860
  • Elizabeth Rendall Tulloch, born 11th August 1862. She died 19th October 1940 and is buried in Saint Boniface churchyard, Papa Westray.
  • William Gray Tulloch, born 10th June 1864
  • George Tulloch, born 15th September 1866
  • John Harcus Tulloch, born 29th September 1868

In the 1861 census Jane and James, and their 6-month-old daughter Mary, were boarders in the house of Mary Scott at Upper Cowgate, Westray. James's occupation was given as agricultural labourer. By the time of the 1871 census, James and Jane had returned to Papa Westray, and James was working on the Holland estate.

Jane and James apparently spent the rest of their lives on Papa Westray, being recorded there in the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses. Jane died on 20th May 1905, at the age of 69 years. James lived until 20th April 1924, dying at the age of 83 years (although the gravestone inscription says he was 82 years old). They are buried in St. Boniface churchyard, Papa Westray.
