Introduction / Barbara Allan / Westray Allans

Other Westray Allans

The following are other Allans found on Westray before 1900:

(1) John Allan who married Barbara Dreaver and were parents of Peter Allan, baptised on 13th May 1783, Westray or Papa Westray. Parents having these same names are also parents of Margaret Allan, baptised on Eday on 5th April 1789. No other records were found relating to these family members.

(2) John Allan who married Margaret Leslie in the East Parish of Westray on 15th July 1805. Theirs was the earliest marriage recorded in the Westray OPR. No children were found for this couple, and it is not known what became of them. It is thought this John Allan could be the son of John Allan and Margaret Bews.

(3) John Allan who married Janet Hewerston (Hewison) and were parents of Christian Allan, baptised on 24th Januay 1808. No other records were found for this family. It is possible this could be the same John Allan as in the previous paragraph.

(4) Andrew Allan who married Mary Robertson in the East Parish of Westray on 29th January 1806. They had the following children:

  • Elizabeth Allan, c. 1st Dec 1806
  • Stewart Logie Allan, c. 3rd March 1809
  • Thomas Allan, c. 1st May 1811
  • Ann Allan, c. 28th Jan 1813
  • Robina Allan, c. 18th March 1815
  • Unnamed daughter, c. 8th March 1817

All except the first, when no distinction was made, were recorded in the East Parish of Westray.

It is thought that Robina Allan was at Holland No 1, Papa Westray in the 1841 census. No other records have been found relating to this family and it is not known what happened to them.

The 1841 Westray census reflects 13 year old Agricultural Labourer Christian Allan at Breaken, East Parish, in the household of farmer James Liddle. This Christian has not been identified.

The 1851 Westray census includes Janet Allan, a 27 year old servant at Cleat. The census indicates she was born on Pharay, and she is thought to be a granddaughter of David Allan and Elizabeth Sinclair.

The 1859 statutory death records include the death, on 12th August, of Barbara Allan, widow of (James) Foubister. This Barbara was born in St. Andrews Parish and she is not part of the Westray Allans.

The 1891 census shows, at Fribo, James Allan, born Eday, his wife Ann, born Pharay, and two sons, one born Pharay and one born Eday. An Allan Westray connection is not immediately apparent, although Ann is a Drummond, daughter of Stewart Drummond and Jane Drever.
