Samuel Gray and Mary Jane Byers

Samuel Gray was considerably younger than his brothers and sisters with a gap of 15 years between him and sister, Margaret Gray. His mother, Margaret Corrigall would have been around 47 years when he was born. He was brought up at Stackiegeo in Eday with his parents. In 1901, he was 18 years and a fisherman. He was still there with his widowed father and older siblings, John Gray and Mary Gray.

Samuel married Mary Jane Byers (b. 1892), the daughter of John Byers and Mary Rendall, from nearby Green in Eday. They had two children:

  • William (Billy) Gray (b. 1918) who married on 16th November 1958 but had no family. He died on 19th October 1997.
  • Mary Jean Gray (b. 1928) who died on 12th March 1972. She never married.

Samuel Gray died at Schoolplace, Eday on 6th August 1967, aged 84 years. Mary Jane Byers died the following year on 23rd November, aged 76 years. Their children also lived at Schoolplace.
