Introduction / Houses / Doggerboat

How Doggerboat Got Its Name

The story goes that an English fishing boat that had been fishing at the Doggerbank in the North Sea got becalmed off Pharay on its way back to its home port. The building of the house was just being finished at that time.

The captain of the fishing vessel came ashore and they got into conversation. He asked what name the house was to be given, only to be told that it had no name. The captain suggested that it might be called “Doggerbank” as he’d just been fishing there and liked the name.

However, for some unknown reason the builder ended up calling the house “Doggerboat” rather than “Doggerbank”.
