Betsy Hourston Reid and James Sinclair

Betsy Hourston Reid (b. 19th November 1851) was the third of the five children of William Reid and Ann Hourston. While born in Eday, she had moved to Firth on the Mainland of Orkney and married by the time of the 1881 census.

She married James Sinclair (b. 6th June 1853) in 1880 and they were staying at Cursiter, close to her parents at Heddle Cottage. James was born in Firth, the son of David Sinclair and Lydia Wood.

Betsy and James had a son:

  • James Sinclair (b. abt 1888) who married Catherine Linay Heddle (b. abt 1891) in 1914. Catherine was the daughter of John Heddle and Robina Wylie from Horraldshay, Firth. James died on 22nd March 1960 and Catherine on 4th August 1971.

James was a farmer and they continued living at Cursiter.

James died at Horraldshay on 15th January 1928. Betsy died on 11th July 1930.
