Ann Hourston and William Reid

Ann Hourston (b. abt 1822) was the second of the seven children of David Hourston and Janet Miller. She married William Reid (b. 15th May 1818), the son of David Reid and Jean Angus on 3rd January 1843.

Ann and William had five children:

  • Ann Reid, born 11th October 1844 who married John Harcus on 6th April 1865. John was born about 1843, the son of Robert Harcus and Margaret Shearer. They had a son, William Harcus, who was born in Eday on 20th September 1865.
  • William Reid, born 10th July 1849 and died young
  • William Reid, born 3rd March 1854
  • David Reid, born 23rd November 1858 who married Annie Watters, the daughter of William Watters and Betsy Taylor on 22nd February 1883. David and Ann had a son David William Reid (b. 1884; d. 13th September 1922). David Reid snr died at Heddle Cottage, Firth on 22nd June 1937.

Ann and William stayed at Stenaquoy in Eday before moving to Heddle Cottage in Firth between 1871 and 1881. It is only their youngest son, David Reid, who appears with them in Firth in the 1881 census. William is described as a farmer of 44 acres.

William died at Heddle Cottage on 26th January 1906 and Ann on 10th August 1911.
