Christina Hourston and James Allan

Christina Hourston (b. 28th January 1835) was the youngest of the seven children of David Hourston and Janet Miller.

Christina married James Allan (b. 10th January 1832) at her parent’s house of Wellhouse on 7th January 1858. James was the son of James Allan and Elizabeth Skea from Eastonquoy.

Christina and James had nine children:

  • Peter Laughton Allan, born 12th December 1858 who married Elizabeth Tulloch Drever (b. 17th March 1862) on 12th January 1887 and that year went to the US. They had two children: William L Allan, born May 1888 in New York and Florence Allan, born May 1891 in Pennsylvania. By 1920, they were back in Binghamton, NY.
  • Jessie Ann Allan, born 16th October 1861 who married William Meil (b. about 1861) on 19th January 1888. William was the son of Donald Meil and Jessie Scott. Jessie and William were in the Ayre Rd in Kirkwall in 1891 and 1901 where William was a fish merchant. It appears that they had no family. William died on 9th July 1928 and Jessie on 13th July 1943, aged eighty one.
  • James Allan, born 27th July 1863
  • William Allan, born 25th March 1868 who married Helen Sutherland (b. 16th October 1873) in 1900. Helen was born in Eday and the daughter of Samuel Sutherland and Mary Ann Park. William and Helen stayed at North Fara House until the 1930s. William died on 2nd August 1943 and Helen on 29th March 1957 and are interred in St Olafs cemetery on the outskirts of Kirkwall.
  • John H Allan, born 15th December 1870 who was in the US in 1900 with his brother Peter.
  • Robert Allan, born 14th August 1873
  • Christina R Allan, born abt. 1887 who went to the US in 1905 for a brief period and returned in 1907. In 1910 she was a servant in New Jersey.
  • Edith Brown Allan, born abt. 1890 who accompanied her sister Christina to the US in 1907.

The family were at Christina’s parents at Wellhouse in 1871 and in subsequent censuses at South Fara House / North Fara House.

James died at North Fara House on 11th July 1891.

Christina was in Kirkwall at 6 Fraser’s Close at the time of the 1901 census with her two younger daughters.
