Edward Spence and Catherine Mackay

Edward Spence (b. 13th August 1829) was the eldest child of Edward Spence and Barbara Hourston and was with the family at Crowbar, Eday in 1841 and 1851.

He married Catherine Mackay (b. 24th February 1835) on 20th January 1859. Catherine was a daughter of John Mackay and Elizabeth Gunn. She was born in Dunnet, Caithness. Her father had been widowed and was grieve at Holland, Papa Westray by 1851.

Edward was a teacher.

Their first child was born at Holland House, Papa Westray and they emigrated shortly afterwards to Nova Scotia, Canada where their subsequent children were born:
