Barbara Hourston and Edward Spence

Barbara Hourston (c. 6th October 1798) was the youngest of the known children of David Hourston and Christian Drever.

She married Edward Spence (b. 25th August 1806) on 2nd February 1828. Edward was the son of James Spence and Jean Groat.

Barbara and Edward had four children:

• Edward Spence, born 13th August 1829 who married Catherine Mackay

• Christian Spence, born 21st September 1831 who married her first cousin James Spence

• John Spence, born 7th October 1839 who married Barbara Deerness

• Barbara Spence, born 4th October 1846 who married David Thomson

They were living at Crowbar, Eday in 1841 where Edward was an agricultural labourer / fisherman. They spent the rest of their lives there.

Barbara died on 23rd July 1867 at Crowbar and Edward on 18th February 1881 at St Catherine’s Place, Kirkwall. This is likely to have been at the house of his daughter, Barbara Spence.
