John Spence and Barbara Deerness

John Spence (b. 7th October 1839) was a son of Edward Spence and Barbara Hourston from Crowbar, Eday. He was a servant at Millbank, the house of his cousin, John Hourston, and Mary Reid in 1861.

John married Barbara Deerness (b. abt 1838, Sanday) at Saur, Eday on 7th November 1861. Barbara was a daughter of John Deerness and Margaret Muir.

They were to leave Eday. Their children included:

• Margaret Spence, born 22nd January 1865; died, 5th March 1865, Shapinsay

• Margaret Spence, born 14th June 1866, Shapinsay

• John Spence, born abt. 1876, Kirkwall

• James Spence, born abt. 1879, Leith

• Edward Spence, born abt. 1881, Leith

The family were in Leith in 1881. John’s occupation was given as general labourer.

Barbara died at Shotts, Lanarkshire on 9th April 1914. John had died some time previously.
