He married Ann Allan on 23rd November 1855 at her home at North Pharay, Eday. Ann was born on Eday, on 7th March 1828, the daughter of James Allan and Elizabeth Reid. John and Ann had four children, all born on Eday:
John's and Ann's marriage record includes the notation that they are second cousins. John's parents were first cousins, as his grandmothers, Isabella Allan and Marion Allan were sisters. Ann's paternal grandfather, David Allan, was their brother. John and Ann lived at Shoehall, Eday. At the time of their marriage John was a shoemaker, but in later years he was described as a crofter. Ann died at Shoehall on 29th January 1907, and John died there on 2nd August 1922, age 91. They are buried in the old Eday kirkyard:
