Mary Harcus and John Gullion

Mary Harcus (baptised on 11th Nov 1798) was the oldest of the children of James Harcus and Marion Allan and born before their move from Westray to Pharay. She married John Gullion who was baptised on 21st April 1803 on Westray, the son of George Gullion and Isabella Allan. The Gullion family evidently moved to Eday sometime about 1820 and they married there on 21st March 1825.

Mary and John had six children all born on Eday:

  • Stewart Gullion, b. abt 1835. It is not known what became of him.

Mary and John were first cousins; their mothers were sisters Marion and Isabella, daughters of John Allan and Marion Harcus.

John Gullion was a master shoemaker. He and Mary were living at Shoehall, Eday in 1841 and 1851. In 1861 they were living at Warthill, Eday with daughter Isabella and soon after, John and Mary moved to Shapinsay where son James was living. John died at East Laro, Shapinsay, on 9th August 1866, at age 63. Mary remained at East Laro for several years but by 1881 she had returned to Shoehall, Eday where she lived with the family of her son John. In the 1881 census, she was described as a knitter. She died at Shoehall on 23rd September 1883.
