David Reid

David Reid (b. 28th September 1871) was the eldest of the eight children of Archibald Reid and Betsy Leslie of Bigging in Rackwick, Westray.

He married Jean Thomson (b. 2nd July 1872) in Eday in 1890. Jane was the daughter of William Thomson and Margaret Miller. Her paternal grandparents, John Thomson and Margaret Rendall, had come to Eday from Kirkbrae in Westray in the 1850s. Her parents stayed at Lesshammer in Eday.

David and Jean’s eldest daughter was born in Eday with the rest of the six children born in Links, Westray:

• Margaret Jane Reid, born about 1891 who married Richard Reid (b. 8th January 1874) in September 1917. Richard was the son of Thomas Reid and Elizabeth Bremner. They had family. Margaret died at Floss, Westray on 6th March 1924. Richard died there on 13th November 1927.

• Archibald Reid, born 11th September 1892 who married Jessie Ann Brown on 10th May 1918 in Sanday. Jessie was the daughter of David Brown and Barbara Goar. They had family and Archibald died in Sanday on 28th November 1962.

• William Thomson Reid, born 6th July 1895 who was a Private in the Scottish Rifles and died at Alexandria on 10th August 1919

• Elizabeth Leslie Reid, born 16th July 1903 and died at Rose Cottage on 15th November 1920

• Jessie Ann Reid, born 1st January 1911 who married Andrew Moodie Sinclair on 8th June 1928 in Sanday. They had family but Jessie died at Laminess, Sanday on 15th April 1945. She was only thirty four years old.

• David Reid, born 15th April and died 17th April 1912

David was a fisherman and seaman at this time.

Jean died at Rose Cottage, Westray on 28th March 1919. She was only forty six.

David remarried in November 1922. His second wife was Jane Mason Rendall (b. 28th July 1874) who was the eldest daughter of James Rendall and Isabella Tulloch Scollay. Jane died at Rose Cottage on 14th December 1949. David died on 2nd October 1963. He was ninety two.
