Introduction / Families / Hourston / David Hourston and Christian Drever

Jean Hourston and George Leslie

Jean Hourston was born in Pharay about 1791 to David Hourston and Christian Drever.

She married George Leslie in Westray on 4th December 1818. George (b. 3rd July 1794) was the son of Thomas Leslie and Jane Leslie.

George may have had a daughter two years previously. (See relationship between granddaughter Jemima Stout and William Burgher.)

George and Jean spent the rest of their lives on Westray and had seven children:

  • David Leslie c. 22nd May 1824 who probably died pre 1841
  • Jean Leslie c. 13th January 1828 who married Lawrence Stout, a cousin of Jeremiah Stout.

The family were at Grimbust in 1841 when George’s occupation was given as farmer. By 1851, Jean and George and three of their children, Thomas, Christian and Isabella, were at Airy. George at that time is described as a farmer of 4 acres employing one woman.

He died at Airy on 4th July 1856 and Jean on 5th June 1872.
