Margaret Flett Leslie and James Rendall

Margaret Flett Leslie (c. 25th September 1830) was a daughter of George Leslie and Jean Hourston.

She married James Rendall (c. 26th June 1832) in May 1854. James was the son of James Rendall and Isabella Kelday of Saltness, Westray.

They stayed at Saltness and had four children

  • James Rendall, born 11th July 1858 who married Kate Sutton. They had five children: James Leslie Rendall (b. 1883) who married Florence Rosetta Warboys in 1909; Ada Rendall; Louise Rendall; Dorothy Rendall; and Aubrey Rendall. James worked for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Co and died sometime after 1930 in Carshalton, London.
  • Mary Rendall, born 29th December 1861. Mary married George Drever from Westray in Edinburgh on 19th March 1887. George was the son of David Drever and Barbara Manson.
  • George Rendall, born 2nd December 1871; died 21st March 1940 in London.

The 1861 census gives James’s occupation as boatman and indicates that they stayed at the Saltness shop.

James drowned on 1st January 1873 off North Ronaldsay and is buried in the old kirkyard there.

Erected by his children in memory of James Rendall born in Westray and was drowned at N. Ronaldshay 1st Jan 1873, aged 41 years

Margaret was with her family in Edinburgh in 1881 but back at Saltness where she died on 14th December 1883.
