Introduction / Families / Groat / Robert Groat and Janet Guthrie / John Groat and Margaret Bain / James Clouston Groat and Betsy Peace John GroatJohn Groat (b. 8th June 1869) was the sixth of the eight children of James Clouston Groat and Betsy Peace. He left the family at Windbrake in Stronsay and went to Leith where he married Annie Croy (b. 12th January 1865) on 16th October 1890. Annie was also from Stronsay and the daughter of Edward Croy and Ann Chalmers, Freehall. They had a son, James Groat, who was born in North Leith on 10th July 1891. Unfortunately Annie died in 1893. John was back with his parents at Windbrake at the time of the 1901 census. He remarried on 29th November 1906 to Janet Shearer at Freehall. John and Janet were subsequently in Shapinsay. John died at there at Chapelbrae on 30th July 1942, aged seventy two and Janet two years later on 13th June 1944. | |||
