Robert Groat and Janet Guthrie

Robert Groat (b. abt 1777) was a son of Robert Groat and Elizabeth Drever. The Groats stayed at Quoy at the north end of Pharay. He married Janet Guthrie (b. abt 1780), possibly in Kirkwall, on 29th November 1802. Janet died sometime between the 1841 and 1851 census and consequently her parents are not known.

Robert and had seven children who were baptised in Pharay:

  • Robert Groat c. 27th August 1803 who married Elizabeth Harcus
  • John Groat c. 28th August 1805 who married Margaret Bain
  • Thomas Groat c. 6th January 1812
  • Barbara Groat c. 30th December 1813 who married John Drever
  • Janet Groat c. 30th May 1816 and died at Lakequoy on 4th August 1882, aged sixty seven.

John and Thomas Drever were brothers, sons of David Drever and Ann Reid from Hammar.

Jean Groat and Thomas Drever, who married on 10th November 1840, formed a separate household with their family at Quoy, appearing from the 1841 census.

Robert died at Quoy on 17th January 1861 at the age of eighty three.
