Thomas Hercus and Margaret Reid

Thomas Hercus (b. about 1879) was a son of Peter Hercus and Margaret Drever of Doggerboat.

He married Margaret Reid (b. 20th June 1877) of Holland in 1907. Margaret was the daughter of James Leslie Reid and Isabella Reid who had moved there from Westray in the mid to late 1880s. They had three children.

Thomas was the captain of the S.S. Petunia, which as torpedoed during WWI and was interned in Germany.

He, together with his son, captured two German Air Force officers after they crashed on his farm in Sandwick on the Orkney mainland on Christmas Day 1939.

Thomas retired and was building a new house in Finstown when he died on 19th March 1957.

Margaret died on 2nd September 1970. She was eighty nine.
