Barbara Drummond and James Cormack

Barbara Drummond (b. 4th June 1853) was the eldest of the two daughters of Stewart Drummond and Elizabeth Drever.

Her widowed mother and sister were in Shore St, Kirkwall having moved in from Westray by 1871. Barbara was a housemaid for a Robertson family at Buttquoy House.

She married James Cormack (b. 11th June 1855) on 3rd June 1880 in Victoria St. James was the son of fisherman John Cormack and Ann Reid from Noneyha in Eday. James was a stonemason.

They had one son:

  • John Stewart Cormack, born about 1881 in Kirkwall. John became a solicitor and married Jessie Whyte Templie in 1916 in Morningside, Edinburgh. He died on 6th November 1949.

The 1901 census gives James’s occupation as monumental sculptor.

James died 31st March 1923 and Barbara on 22nd January 1946. She was ninety two.

A single stone in St Olaf’s cemetery records their deaths together with those of Barbara’s mother (Elizabeth Drever), niece (Elizabeth Rendall, daughter of Barbara’s sister Margaret Rendall and John Rendall) and son, John Stewart Cormack.
