Introduction / Families / Drummond

William Drummond and Barbara Groat

William Drummond and Barbara Groat are known to have had at least six children:

  • Jane Drummond, baptised 14th September 1800, Westray who married John Harcus
  • John Drummond, baptised 31st October 1802, Westray who married Janet Reid
  • William Drummond, baptised 8th May 1808, Pharay. He was at Doggerboat in 1851, the home of his sister Jean, when he was described as a retired farmer and aged forty two. He was unmarried. William died there on 21st July 1857.
  • Mary Drummond – The year of Mary’s birth is unknown. She died on 15th October 1821 according to a gravestone.

It seems likely that William died prior to 1841 as he does not appear in the census. Barbara was at Cott and then aged 65 years. She does not appear in the 1851 census and consequently the parents of neither can be confirmed. It is thought that Barbara died around 1849.

It is noted that the first two children were born in Westray and that there was a William Drummond baptised in Westray on 12th April 1768 who was the son of John Drummond and Jean Drever.

Although they had children born in Pharay, the name Drummond does not appear in the 1810 rental. This might support an argument that Barbara Groat was daughter of Robert Groat and Elizabeth Drever at Quoy and were staying there at the time. However, this is speculation.
