John Harcus and Barbara Muir

John Harcus (b. 7th April 1845) was a son of John Harcus and Jane Scollay of Damsay, Westray.

He remained at Damsay after marrying Barbara Muir (b. 31st January 1855) in 1876. Barbara was the daughter of Robert Muir and Jessie Scott.

John and Barbara had four children:

• John Harcus, born 3rd January 1878; died 14th April 1962, Westray

• Robina Harcus, born 19th November 1879 who married Thomas Fergus

• James Harcus, born 14th November 1881

• William Harcus, born 8th April 1884. It is not known if this is the William Harcus recorded on vessels in New York (Ellis Island records) in 1918 and 1919, aged 35 and 36.

John and Barbara were to spend their lives at Damsay, John dying there on 24th February 1920 and Barbara on 28th April 1936.
