Elizabeth Groat and Robert Drever

Elizabeth Groat (c. 11th December 1837) was the fourth of the six children of John Groat and Margaret Bain. She was born in Westray and married Robert Drever (b. 11th September 1837) in 1862. Robert was the son of Thomas Drever and Jean Bain from Moa and subsequently Roadside.

Elizabeth’s brother, Robert Groat, married Robert’s sister, Mary Drever.

Elizabeth and Robert lived at Roadside in Westray but moved to East Hammer some time between the birth of their first child in 1863 and the second child where he was to farm 20 acres. They had three children:

• Margaret Drever who as born on 19th November 1863 and married William Drever

• Tomina Drever who was born on 21st April 1867. She appears in the 1881 census as Tomasina.

• Robert Drever who was born on 12th January 1874 and married Jessie Robertson in October 1894 in Westray. Jessie was born on 1st January 1871 to Alexander Robertson and Mary Muir of Tuan in Westray. Robert died at the age of forty eight on 25th December 1922 at East Hammar and Jessie on 21st April 1962, aged ninety one, at Newark. They had a daughter, Mary Drever, on 16th February 1895 who married George Fergus in 1914 and had a family of thirteen. She died at Newark on 27th April 1955.

Elizabeth died at East Hammer on 13th August 1910, aged seventy three. Robert died on 4th May 1919. He was eighty two.
