Eleanor Wymms Fea and Williamm Robertson Linklater

Eleanor Fea was the eighth child of Peter & Christina, born in 1841 at Kirkwall.

"FEA, Eleanor Weymss lawful daughter of Peter Fea and Christina Hepburn was born August 1st 1841 and baptised by the Revd. Ebenezer Ritchie. Witnesses the Congregation."

Cameron Linklater records the family story that Eleanor was educated at Kirkwall Grammar School. She had the opportunity of being companion to Lady Balfour of Balfour Castle, Shapinsay, but decided to marry instead.

She married William Robertson Linklater on 30th October, 1862 Broad Street, Kirkwall, after Banns, according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. William was the son of William & Mary Linklater, nee Drever, born 1st January, 1839 at Kirkwall.

William was a Baker's Apprentice in 1861; later a Journeyman Baker & Confectioner.

Migration to Australia

They lived in Kirkwall for three years, during which two children were born. They then migrated to South Australia, sailing from Plymouth in the Ernestine on 8th May 1866 with young Charlotte and Christina and arriving 4th September. £1 was paid to Commissioner - Agent, I. H. Baikie. On board were 368 souls (334 adults). Relations already in South Australia included Eleanor's elder sister, Margaret Miller and William's sister, Barbara, who had since married Malcolm Grant.

In South Australia they first lived in Kermode Street, North Adelaide.

They received some assistance from a James Munro Linklater (from Orkney, but no relationship has yet been established). James was a trustee of the Permanent Building Society, to which William belonged and from which, on 25th August 1868, William secured a loan of £400 to purchase premises at 'part town acre 211' on the corner of Pulteney and Pirie Streets in Adelaide's central business district. The property was sold on January 11th 1870, due to insolvency.

After this they moved to Kapunda, a copper mining town some 80 Km from Adelaide. They were there when Robert William was born in 1873. Later they lived in Hawker and other places, with William working as a Baker.

Their children were:

  • Christina Hepburn Linklater (1864-1939) married Steven William Impett.
  • Charlotte Ann Linklater (1865-1953) married Reed
  • William Miller Linklater (1866- )
  • Eleanor Linklater (1871-1952) married Pearce
  • Robert Miller Linklater (1873-1958)
  • Mary Wallace Linklater (1877 - died 28th January, 1877 from Bronchitis and diarrhoea, at Kensington, South Australia. (src. death certificate)
  • Sylvia Linklater born 1878; died on the 31st March, 1881
  • Ada Pomona Linklater born 1881; died 26th August, 1888 (aged 7 years) at Flinders Street, Adelaide, of Croup and Diphtheria (src.death certificate). She is buried at West Terrace Cemetery with her mother and sister, Eleanor Pearce.
  • Eva Melita Linklater (1882-1966) married Benjamin Halfpenny
  • Wallace Lancelot Linklater (1885 - )

It appears that Eleanor and William separated, with Ellen living in a boarding house in Flinders Street, Adelaide, in 1888, about three years after the birth of their last child.

She died 7th October, 1908 at 43 Flinders Street, Adelaide aged 67 years of Carcinoma of Uterus (12 months) (src.death certificate) bur. 8th October, 1908 - West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, East Section 2-3 Row 9 (src.funeral notice) res. 43 Flinders Street, Adelaide, South Australia (src.death notice)

Willian died on 22nd September, 1921 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia bur. West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
