Peter Benston

Peter Benston was the second son of Adam Benston and Grace Gullion, born on Eday, on 4th November 1841. Peter went to North America as a child, probably about 1851 or 52. By 1860 he had settled with his family in Green County, Wisconsin. Peter volunteered for service in the Union Army during the US Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Co. K of the 16th Wisconsin Infantry on 10th December 1863. He was wounded at Atlanta. The newspaper of Appleton, Wisconsin, the Appleton Mailer, reported in its September 29th 1864 edition that he had received a "severe shoulder wound" on 23rd August. Peter was mustered out on 12th July 1865.

Peter apparently married soon after. A gravestone in Green's Prairie Cemetery, York Township, Green County, Wisconsin has the following inscription: Emely Benston, wife of Peter, d. 8 Sept 1866, age 20 yr, 5 mo. No other record relating to this marriage has been found.

Peter married again, on 27th November 1869, Adda A. Crowell in Green County. They were living there in 1880 where Peter was a farmer. It appears they had no children, but there were four other Crowells in their household, ranging in age from 15 to 24. These four were identified as servants, but were probably related to Adda in some way.

The 1890 Wisconsin Veteran's Schedule includes a listing for Peter Benston in Albany Village, Green County. No further information has been found regarding Peter or Adda and it is not known what became of them. No Civil War Pension Record has been located for Peter, unusual for a veteran who sustained an injury.
