William Allan and Elizabeth Inkster

William Allan, the only son of John Allan and Christy Bews, was born on 4th June 1864 on Shapinsay. He married on 17th December 1897, at Little Coggar, Wasbister, Rousay, Elizabeth Rebecca Inkster who was born on Rousay on 29th July 1872 to John Inkster and Elizabeth Marwick. Their children included:

  • William Allan, b. 1903 and died 10th Sep 1904 on Shapinsay
  • John Allan, b. abr 1904-5 in Shapinsay and died in Balfour Hospital, Kirkwall, 30th Apr 1944

Elizabeth died on Shapinsay, on 6th October 1908. William subsequently married Elizabeth Frances Sinclair in Kirkwall on 27th May 1909. At the time William was a fish curer living in Kirkwall. In spite of his time in Kirkwall, and time at Monquanny where he was a farm servant in 1881, for most of his life William was a farmer at Pictou, Shapinsay. He died there on 2nd November 1948, at age 84. His death was reported by his nephew David Work. A Shapinsay gravestone has the following inscription: "Erected by William Allan in memory of his beloved wife, Elizabeth Inkster, who died 6th October 1908, aged 36 years. Also their son, William, who died 10 Sept 1904, aged 18 months. Also, their son, John, who died in Balfour Hospital, 30 April 1944, aged 39 years."
