Introduction / Westray Grays / Archibald Gray / Louisa Gray and William Lennie

James Lennie and Isabella Sandison

James Lennie was the son of Louisa Gray and William Lennie, and was baptised 20th November 1812 in Westray. About 1839 he married Isabella Sandison (daughter of Thomas Sandison and Jean Logie, born in Westray about 1812) and they are known to have had the following children:

  • Jean Lennie, born 6 September 1842. She married William Manson.
  • Margaret Lennie, born 11 October and christened 4 October (???) 1847. She was recorded with her parents in the 1851, 1871, and 1881 censuses. (In 1861 she was visiting next door.) In the 1901 census she was a servant at Hahouse, Westray, and still unmarried. No further records have been located for her.
  • James Lennie, born 26 November 1856, and died 24 December 1857, age 1 yr.

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses the family was recorded at Fancy (or Faney), Westray. The following chart shows the household in 1851:

1851 - Fancy, Westray
Relation Status Age Occupation Born
James Lennie Head Married 38 years Fisherman Westray
Isabela Lennie Wife Married 38 years Westray
William Lennie Son 10 years Scholar Westray

By 1861 they had moved to East Links, and James and Isabella remained there through the 1881 census. In 1861 James's occupation was still "fisherman"; by 1871 he was a farmer and fisherman, and in the 1881 census he was listed as a farmer of 7 acres.

Isabella died at Links, Westray, on 7th September 1881, and James died there on 31st January 1889.
