Introduction / Westray Grays / Archibald Gray / Mary Ann Gray and John Tulloch James Tulloch and Mary PottingerJames Tulloch was baptised 8th July 1804, the son of John Tulloch and Mary Ann Gray. He married Mary Pottinger on 4th Dec. 1829. Mary had been born about 1802, and was the daughter of Thomas Pottinger and Marjory Thomson. James and Mary apparently didn't have any children. In the 1841-1861 censuses the couple were at Nearhouse, Westray, where James's occupation in 1841 and 1851 was fisherman, and in 1861 it was a "farmer of 6 acres". In the 1841 and 1851 censuses James and Mary had Mary's niece Sarah Yorston (born in 1832, daughter of Catherine Pottinger and William Yorston) staying with them, and in the 1851 census they also had James's niece Janet Tulloch (youngest daughter of William Tulloch and Elizabeth Drever) with them, as shown below.
A collection of Westray gravestone inscriptions includes one for "James Tulloch / died July 18th 1863 / aged 61 years", which cannot be linked to anyone else. However the Death registration indicates that he died 29th July 1864. Mary died 5th February 1876. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
