Henry Gray and Jean Liddell

Henry Gray, the oldest known child of George Gray and Margaret Seatter was baptized 2^nd February 1743. It is known that a Henry Gray married Jean Liddell and had family in Westray in the 1760s and 1770s. Because civil registration of births, marriages and deaths did not commence until 1855, there are no records of Westray marriages until 1805,and due to the lack of other definitive evidence, it is not possible to prove that the husband of Jean Liddell was the son of George Gray. >However, Henry was not a common given name in the 18^th century, and the naming pattern of their children is consistent with Henry being George Gray's son. Therefore it is thought possible and perhaps even likely that Henry Gray was the son of George Gray.

The four known children of Henry Gray and Jean Liddell, all born on Westray, were:

• George Gray, c. 13^th Oct 1765

• Henry Gray, c. 31 July 1769

• James Gray, c. 21 Apr 1771

• Margaret Gray, c. 20^th June 1773

No evidence of Henry and Jean's children has been found on Westray and it is not known what became of them.
