Jane Gray and James Sclater

Jane Gray was born in Westray about 1800, but no records have been found which give the names of her parents. She married James Sclater, probably about 1820. They had eight known children, of whom the oldest three were born in Lady, Sanday, and the others in Kirkwall. The children were:

• Elizabeth Sclater, born 26th December 1820

• James Sclater, born 23rd December 1823

• Thomas Sclater, born 26th April 1826

• Robina Fotheringham Sclater, born 12th October 1828

• Robert Drever Sclater, born 15th October 1830

• David Drever Sclater, born 11th August 1833

• William Sclater, born 3rd July 1837

• Peter Gray Sclater (or perhaps Peter Hay Sclater) born 16th November 1840

In the 1841 census the family is recorded as follows:

In 1851 it appears that James was still living, but was elsewhere, and only the two youngest were still at home.
