George Allan and Margaret Irvine

George Allan and Margaret Irvine are known to be parents of two sons:

  • Balfour Allan, c. 26th Nov 1791, Westray. d 23rd May 1874, age 84, Main Street, Kirkwall. He married Margaret Muir of Sanday, on 20th May 1822 in Kirkwall. Balfour was a day labourer. He and Margaret had seven children all born in Kirkwall:
    • Ann Gordon Allan, b. 13th April 1823, c. 27th April 1823
    • George Allan, b. 17th Sept 1824, c. 10th Oct 1824, m. 1857, Janet Irvine of Stromness. They had no family.
    • Ann Gordon Allan, b.8th Feb 1826, c. 15th May 1826
    • Balfour Allan, b. 5th Feb 1827, c. 10th Feb 1827
    • James Allan, b. 15th Jan 1829, c. 22nd Feb 1829
    • Margaret Wald Allan, b. 16th April 1830, c. 23rd May 1830
    • Alexander Allan, b. 1st May 1832, c. 10th June 1832
  • John Allan, c. 23rd Feb 1797 in the parish of Firth and Stenness (born 19th Feb 1794 per his gravestone inscription and in Firth per census records), d. 17th November 1877, Westray, married to Jean (Jane) Harcus

According to the death records of both John and Balfour their father George was a sailor in the Royal Navy. Nothing more is known of them. It is thought that George is the son of John Allan and Marion Harcus, baptised on 27th July 1768 although this cannot be proved.
