John Allan and Jean Harcus

John Allan, baptised on 23rd February 1797, son of George Allan and Margaret Irvine, and married Jean (Jane) Harcus, daughter of George Harcus and Jean Harcus. They had three sons, born in the East Parish of Westray:

  • George Allan, c. 2nd June 1816, married Euphemia Dick (Seator)
  • John Allan, c. 6th March 1820, married Elizabeth Balfour

John was baptised in the parish of Firth and Stenness on the Mainland according to the OPR (and Firth based on his birthplace noted in later census records), but lived most of his life on Westray In 1841, he was at Storehouse. In 1851, he was at New House. In 1861, he was at Allan House and in 1871, he was at Broughton Place. According to census records and his death record, John was a master shoemaker. He died on 17th November 1877, age 85, at Broughton. Jean passed away, also at Broughton, on 29th July 1879. The gravestone inscription in Westray reads as follows:
